Now, I promised ACen anecdotes, so here are a few... Except that they sort of turned into long boring narratives, so I'll head each one with a small "headliner" of sorts.
- Spatula Sushu! Sushu commandeers elevator and disses goth-boi with 4-foot spatula while carrying a box of cookies in 1 hand.
So for our "What is Love" skit we have this bar. This bar was made by Geoff and his dad, and is quite immense. It is proper bar height (4 ft?), and about 5 ft long, reinforced by 2x4"s and wood panelling. In short, ginormous and heavy as hell. Geoff + dad arrives at 7pm (at the height of Friday Con and just as the prom folk are arriving, more on that later), and we faced the daunting task of trying to get the bar up to the 10th floor on congested elevators. People were essentially getting on at the second floor lobby, going down one floor, and then riding up, which meant that all the elevators on the first floor would be already full. It so happened that I was carrying a giant 4-foot spatula for Jono's Ukiyo costume, so I run up the escalator to the second floor. It just so happens that the right elevator dings. I make a big ruckus, running into the elevator and waving the spatula to block the elevator door, something to the effect of "OMG nobody come onto the elevator, we've got a GINORMOUS prop downstairs that needs to be moved up!!!" People were not pleased, but generally acquiesced. But! There was this random goth-boi who was gave me this look of "wtf you have no right to do this, ph33r my pleather pants", and tried to step into the elevator. I shoved the spatula in his face and frantically pressed the Lobby button while shouting with the fierceness that comes from desperation. He was pissed, but backed down before the power of my spatula. Triumph!
- OMG it's You! Infamy acquired!
So Saturday morning from 10-Noon, the Masq office is open for skit review. Basically, the Masq staff make sure we're not killing people onstage or anything. We're generally very nervous about this bit, because we tend to... err... push the boundaries a bit. This year, thanks to the amazingness of our skit peeps (I tell them to wake up at 8:30 and they do!), we were down there by 9:50. With the bar. Just because we rock that hard. But anyway, due to unanticipated delays, we go in at 11:20. Pren and I go in first, me in my Lakitu getup, and of course, I'm hopped up on adrenaline, and thus completely spazzy. So the room was in a state of chaos for several minutes as I pranced about shouting "Oh wait, the BAR! The BAR needs to get in! Wait, it's all right, Andrew and Geoff... wait, Geoff's on rollerblades... Eric! Help!" And the Masq people were like "A bark? what?" "I think she said a bar..." "oooh, they've got drinks" "what, rollerblades?" They got even more confused as Anthy and Mario filed in with a bar, followed by Maromi and a Shounen Bat. There were mutterings of "Umm... are you part of this skit?" and "Um... okay... this ... will be ... interesting" It didn't help that I was running around in an orange sweatshirt, a cloud, and a sock on my head. Not the most comforting of images. But then I handed that Masq lady our music cd, which was labelled "UCJAS ACen 2006 Music." She took one look at it and gave me this look of recognition and horror "Oh. my. god. It's YOU! Oh no..." And the other staffers were confused until they saw the CD, and they to joined in a chorus of "It's YOU!!" and "We were wondering if you guys were going to show up..." Someone promptly scurried out and returned with more Masq staffers to watch the show. But yes, UCJAS has reached notoriety among the ACen staffers. ^^;;
- Saturday morning, Cat N got up at like 7:30 and started making pancakes and bacon in the hotel room on an electric griddle. Teh awesome!
- Andrew stayed in the hotel room Friday night to watch the Mets game.
- There was a Prom in the hotel Friday night. This involved several white SUV limos pulling up in front of FMA cosplayers and various Pika-hos, and much snarkiness on the part of ACen con-goers. Some high schoolers now have Wolfwood and his giant cross in the background of their prom photos. V and Y of our party decided to make comments such as "Hey, nice outfit!" and "What show are you from?"
Okay, more later.
